Our History

Terra Livre 21 years - A history, many lives

YEAR 21 2017
20 complete years, Terra Livre has to celebrate ! Challenges, achievements, but still a lot to do. The meeting with ex-students of TL, who are now empowered men with higher education pursuing their dreams, reinforces our certainty that love, solidarity and respect make individuals grow up, and that we are on the right path. The NGO Deliberative Council is strengthened, and is now composed by 8 leaderships that are divided in an educational committee, and an administrative-financial committee. Batteries are reloaded to fly higher, longer and lighter.
  • 2016 - The year is marked by the economical crisis that strikes the country, and leads up to the withdrawal of many partners and maintainers of the institution.
The year is marked by the economical crisis that strikes the country, and leads up to the withdrawal of many partners and maintainers of the institution. An epidemic of Zika virus is also very close to make us cancel the Week of Solidarity... Nearly... But we are strong ! Dreamers and builders. We keep believing in a world with more justice, humanity and love. The strategic planning of the year is dedicated to prevention and protection of the children's rights.

The administration's office and the humanitarian and educational programs are now sharing the same place in Aparecida de Goiania. The financial and administrative team gets transferred to Terra Livre Educational Center, which we better call « Terra Livre » (TL). The Complementary Education activities also come back to TL and no more at PETI ; the agreement with the Municipal Secretary of Education ends there, which was a rich and challenging experience.
  • 2014 - The international program « Week of solidarity » expands and brings to Brazil 40 North-American volunteers.
The international program « Week of solidarity » expands and brings to Brazil 40 North-American volunteers, both teachers and students. The World Cup, which takes place in Brazil, also stimulates pedagogic workships about sport and Brazilian culture.
  • 2013 - Partnership with the Education Secretariat of the city of Aparecida de Goiânia was established, as well as the expansion of activities
This year, a partnership between Terra Livre and the Secretariat of Education of Aparecida de Goiânia was established. Therefore, contributors were sent to help with the NGO’s activities, making the increase of the number of people aided by the institution possible. Other partnerships were also established with the Guardianship Council and the Brazilian Association of Family Therapy, which initiated care for children and their families. Regarding the institution’s administration, the process manual was formalized and implemented, which allowed us to improve the development of our internal activities. In addition to partnerships with private companies that support and assist in the continuity of our work, there was also an improvement in communication with partners and the general community through frequent updating of the site and fan page.
  • 2012 - Partnership with the Public Prosecutor’s office of the State of Goiás to defend the Brazilian Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA)
New partnerships are established with institutions linked to the system that ensures the rights of children and adolescents, where families enrolled in the Project can get health care more fast, as well as psychological care for all referrals made by the Educational Center, where the benefit is extended to the family of the child and/or adolescent attended at the unit.
  • 2011 - Strengthening of the relationship with the Community of the city of Aparecida, and Partnership with the Child Protective Services
The bond with the favored community becomes even stronger, and Terra Livre can currently assist more members of the same family, thus allowing a greater positive impact of actions. The local Child Protective Services are established as a new and powerful partner of the Institution, which allows the recognition of our actions to protect victims of sexual abuse, and begin referring at-risk children and adolescents to Terra Livre Educational Center.
  • 2010 - Provisional Headquarter in Aparecida de Goiânia
Full operation of the provisional headquarters of Terra Livre is what sets a milestone for this year. A hundred vacancies made available for Primary Education (3 to 6 years of age) and Complementary Education (7 to 14 years of age) were filled in stages. Small children stay all day long, receiving care and taking part in pedagogical and recreational activities, besides having 5 meals and going back home after having a shower. Those above 7 years of age participate in workshops like the Book Club (Clubinho da Leitura), Playing and Learning (Brincando e Aprendendo), Capoeira, Footsal, and Basketball. Children’s parents participate in the Community Education, with subjects that increase the positive impact on children.
  • 2009 - We are acknowledged by the Project “Criança Esperança”
The focus of the actions has mainly been on projects to enable the construction of Terra Livres headquarters and to equip it. The victory of being awarded with the Project “Criança Esperança”, in partnership with UNESCO and GLOBO TV, was achieved, which provided new uniforms to our students, music instruments, new computers, and many other fittings. The activities at the temporary headquarters of Terra Livre were initiated with 2 projects: Complementary Education (for kids from 7 to 14 years) and Community Education (for the parents of the grantee kids).
  • 2008 - The possibility of our own headquarter evolves
In 2008, after 12 years of active educational work, always offered for free, the organization received from the Aparecida de Goiânia township a 5,334-m 2 land, in Residencial Araguaia, place where the NGO starts to have increasingly close relations with the local community, which anxiously waits for the construction of Terra Livre Educational Center.
  • 2007 - It is time to develop a pedagogical methodology of our own
The pedagogical aspect of activities is now strengthened, so that the libertarian education actually facilitates the whole expression of the potentials of the children assisted by Terra Livre. It was also a year that stressed the support Psychology can provide, emphasizing great improvement on the levels of self-confidence and happiness of grantee children and teenagers.
  • 2006 - Work has grown, now we have 600 children attended by the project “Complementary Education”
Represented by the challenge of offering weekly complementary education for 600 children from Aparecida de Goiânia, and of rethinking the organization mission, vision, values and goals, the year of 2006 stands as the end of a stage of Terra Livre. The institution, now more mature, starts dreaming and outlining the pages of this history of love, justice and freedom.
  • 2005 - The foundation of Solidarity Week
Tarring boundaries apart! Once the program Solidarity Week was found, Terra Livre started greeting volunteers from other countries, and strengthens its commitment to raise society’s awareness upon childhood and youth rights. Terra Livre was invited to talk about social inequality at private schools in North-American state of Iowa, and talked to more than 1000 students from 9 to 18 years old and made more solid international partnerships.
  • 2004 - Management, planning, controls, staff and budget
Management, planning, control, staff, and budget ended up being the keywords for Terra Livre in 2004. The concern regarding the professionalization of actions lead the organization to train and hire people. The organization started to get credibility and make official partnerships with institutions such as the Public Ministry of the state of Goiás, and the United Nations Office for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, ang gives lectures on the Third Sector at Universities.
  • 2003 - Our Headquarters was looted, but new projects arise
Unfortunately, our modest headquarters was invaded and looted three times in less than 2 months, but we never considered interrupting our activities. We started working in the neighborhood school building, as well as in our brand new main office. In 2003, the “Casa dos Curumins” is born – Terra Livre’s daycare center – kept by a partnership between the NGO and the Associação Holística em Alto Paraíso to assist children from 0 to 3 years. The program on the Childhood and Youth Statute that assisted 1200 students in 2002 would assist 4000 in 2003.
  • 2002 - We became an official NGO
The year of 2002 was a great game changer in Terra Livre´s history. Noticing the continuous expansion of the movement, its members decided to register the organization officially, and it no more is a simple well-intentioned group of people, but a non-profit institution with a National Registry of Legal Entity. Terra Livre makes presentations in an international congress in Scotland, gives a lecture about the Child and Youth Statute to more than 1200 students of the public schools network in the northeastern region of Goiás, being part of the new program Criança e Adolescente: Prioridade Absoluta (Childhood and Youth: Absolute Priority); and triple the number of students participating in fixed courses of complementary education.
  • 2001 - Partnerships with other NGOs and new volunteers
In the year of 2001, a lot of volunteers from the organization got involved with the children with facial deformities, more specifically those with cleft lips, so they could learn about this melancholic and hidden universe. Such an experience has strongly sensitized and pushed up our volunteers group, enhancing the certitude that they had to serve every socially excluded child and young of the state of Goiás. At this same year, more than 200 children from distinct cities of the northeast of Goiás, which is known as “the poverty corridor”, were benefited with gifts, such as toys and toothbrushes. Last, Terra Livre has inaugurated its internet page.
  • 2000 - Community integration
Terra Livre, Jardim Novo Mundo’s community and Vila Maria Luiza merged into a single piece. A dynamic of solidarity was born and persists until today: The organization focused on those challenges that afflicted the assisted families, and they reciprocally helped the NGO out. Terra Livre aided to raise houses, provided dental treatment, dispensed adult-use diapers and medication. There was no longer a difference between the parts, every and each one was a gear in that transforming and solidary mechanism.
  • 1999 - Goiás: Close Encounter of the First Kind
April 1999. The great day has come! The opening of the small Terra Livre’s headquarters in Jardim Novo Mundo, Goiânia’s peripheral region. The greatest challenge: Ensure the local population’s trust. Gradually, we achieved their confidence, culminating in the distribution of circa 200 Christmas gifts to them and the commitment of multiple community members to volunteer work.
  • 1998 - New home, new goals
We want food, entertainment and art! Terra Livre’s operations were running: Classes of English, art, sports and scholar aid, visits to hospitals and terminal phase kids. Simultaneously, Terra Livre would go through changes: Many of its members moved to Goiás, so activities in Rio de Janeiro started to get weak, whereas the possibilities of continuing the work in the new state grew stronger. Albeit the doubts were aplenty, there still was the certitude that this work could not be in vain and must be kept going.
  • 1997 - And the story begins in Rio
In 1997, aspiring a more just, human and free world, Terra Livre was established in Rio. Although the first operation year was marked by disappointments coming from the negatives, astonishment due to such an indifferent world and hearts lacking solidarity, it was also marked by the open smiles on the face of orphanage, favela and periphery children, making the hard work all worth.
